The romantic festival of Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14 every year in several countries around the world including Fance, Canada, India.

Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
These days, Valentine's Day is essentially regarded as festival that celebrates love between individuals and not just lovers. People therefore wish ‘Happy Valentine's Day' to parents, teachers, siblings, friends or any other person special to them.

Though there are various traditions and customs associated with the festival, the most popular way of celebrating Valentines Day is by expressing love to sweethearts and dear ones with an exchange of gifts. Some of the most traditional  Valentine's Day gifts exchanged between lovers are fresh flowers, chocolates and cards. Jewelry is also fast emerging as the most sought after Valentine's Day gift for women. In the modern technologically advanced age, exchange of text messages between friends and loved ones has become a norm.

UK armed forces celebrate Raksha Bandhan

LONDON: Armed forces personnel from across the UK came together with Britain's Hindu communities to celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan over the past a few weeks.

The UK Armed Forces Hindu Network organised Raksha Bandhan celebrations in the lead up to today's festival at the Ministry of Defence in London besides a Raksha Bandhan tour of several temples in Newcastle, Swindon, Liverpool, and London. “The Economic Times”

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a Hindu festival celebrating the bond between siblings. The name itself – ‘Raksha’ means ‘protection’ while ‘Bandhan’ means ‘to tie’. That’s because during celebrations sisters usually tie a bracelet made of red and gold threads interwoven together, around their brother’s wrists. This is meant to symbolise the good relationship they hold. These days the festival has come to be more than a celebration of siblings with others joining in to celebrate the good relationships they hold. According to the BBC, these include priests tying rakhis around the wrists of people in their congregation, friends tying rakhis around each other’s wrists, women tying the bracelet around the wrist of the prime minister and people tying them to the wrists of soldiers.

A rakhi bracelet is usually made from some form of red and gold threads interwoven together. Nowadays they often have beads and stones woven in as well and are sometimes made with silk strands. The bracelet is said to be blessed with verses that are sacred and can be consecrated in rice and grass sometimes with the idea being that it will protect the wearer. This protection is meant to last for the entire year – and is meant to remove sin through one hand and give safety through the other.

Traditions when tying the rakhi
When the bracelet is tied to someone’s wrist, the giver usually recites a prayer for happiness and wealth. This prayer, or mantra, is usually chanted in Sanskrit or Punjabi and after the rakhi has been tied the giver will place a sweet in their mouth while the receiver will usually offer a monetary gift.

King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi
Lord Vishnu disguising himself as the doorman of King Bali--the grandson of Vishnu's ardent devotee Prahlada--Goddess Lakshmi became restless because of his absence in Vaikuntha (their abode). She came to earth in the guise of a Brahmin woman and told Bali, the story of her husband having gone away for some work, due to which she requested for shelter from the King. Bali not only gave her a place to stay, but also took care of her. It's said that on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravana month, she tied a thread around Bali's wrist with prayers for his protection and happiness. Touched by her affection, Bali granted her a wish. She requested him to free her husband, the gatekeeper. The incident had Bali confused as he couldn't envision the lady as the doorman's wife. It's then that both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi revealed their true selves to the King, who urged Vishnu to return with the Goddess to Vaikuntha. The festival is also known Baleva.
Santoshi Maa
On seeing Lord Ganesha celebrate Rakhi with his sister, his sons Shubh and Labh started insisting upon a sister, leading to the creation of Santoshi Maa, from the flames that emerged from his consorts, Riddhi and Siddhi.
Alexander the Great's wife Roxana and King Porus
During Alexander the Great's invasion of India in 326 BCE, his wife Roxana sent a sacred thread to Porus, requesting him not to harm her husband in battle. It's believed that on the battlefield, the thread on his wrist was a constant reminder of his promise to Roxana, preventing him from attacking Alexander directly.
Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun
Rani Karnavati--the widowed queen of Chittor--is said to have sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, upon the looming threat of invasion from the Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah. Though Humayun turned up too late, it's no secret that he honored the sentiment with which it was sent.
Yama and Yamuna
Yamuna was the sister of Lord Yama, the God of death. On every "Shravan Purnima", Yamuna used to tie a sacred thread (Rakhi) to Lord Yama.
