UK armed forces celebrate Raksha Bandhan

LONDON: Armed forces personnel from across the UK came together with Britain's Hindu communities to celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan over the past a few weeks.

The UK Armed Forces Hindu Network organised Raksha Bandhan celebrations in the lead up to today's festival at the Ministry of Defence in London besides a Raksha Bandhan tour of several temples in Newcastle, Swindon, Liverpool, and London. “The Economic Times”

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a Hindu festival celebrating the bond between siblings. The name itself – ‘Raksha’ means ‘protection’ while ‘Bandhan’ means ‘to tie’. That’s because during celebrations sisters usually tie a bracelet made of red and gold threads interwoven together, around their brother’s wrists. This is meant to symbolise the good relationship they hold. These days the festival has come to be more than a celebration of siblings with others joining in to celebrate the good relationships they hold. According to the BBC, these include priests tying rakhis around the wrists of people in their congregation, friends tying rakhis around each other’s wrists, women tying the bracelet around the wrist of the prime minister and people tying them to the wrists of soldiers.

A rakhi bracelet is usually made from some form of red and gold threads interwoven together. Nowadays they often have beads and stones woven in as well and are sometimes made with silk strands. The bracelet is said to be blessed with verses that are sacred and can be consecrated in rice and grass sometimes with the idea being that it will protect the wearer. This protection is meant to last for the entire year – and is meant to remove sin through one hand and give safety through the other.

Traditions when tying the rakhi
When the bracelet is tied to someone’s wrist, the giver usually recites a prayer for happiness and wealth. This prayer, or mantra, is usually chanted in Sanskrit or Punjabi and after the rakhi has been tied the giver will place a sweet in their mouth while the receiver will usually offer a monetary gift.
