Mythological Significance
- In Hindu Tradition: Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana to the kingdom of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile and their victory over the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya celebrated their return by lighting rows of oil lamps (diyas), which is why lighting diyas has become central to Diwali celebrations.
- In Jainism: Diwali marks the attainment of nirvana or liberation by Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara.
- In Sikhism: Diwali is associated with the release of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, from imprisonment by the Mughal emperor Jahangir.
Five Days of Diwali
- Day 1: Dhanteras: People purchase gold, silver, and new utensils for prosperity and good luck.
- Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali): This day commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. People prepare for the main Diwali by cleaning their homes.
- Day 3: Lakshmi Puja: This is the main day of Diwali, when families perform puja to Goddess Lakshmi in the evening and light lamps and fireworks.
- Day 4: Govardhan Puja: This day marks Lord Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to protect the villagers of Vrindavan from rain and storms.
- Day 5: Bhai Dooj: This day celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, similar to Raksha Bandhan, where sisters pray for their brothers' well-being.
Modern Diwali Lighting Diyas and Lamps: Homes, temples, and public spaces are illuminated with oil lamps (diyas) and electric lights to signify the triumph of light over darkness. Lakshmi Puja: People worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, seeking prosperity and success in the coming year.
